Rock music’s ability to express feelings and emotions is considered as one of the most important reasons why it caught the interests as well as the hearts of the public. Its independence as well as the unheeding attitude it trails can easily convey the deepest angst and outlook of the listeners. Because rock is measured as the most liberated form of music, it has also been numerously used in communicating messages of social protest. (“Wikipedia,” 2007)
The counterculture Beatnik is a media stereotype that featured the 1950 aspects of the Beat Generation which often shows violent cartoon interpretation of John Kerouac’s autobiographical fiction. Violence and criminality are most highlighted in this set of presentations and folk rocks as well as jazz music were associated with these movements. These genres were also associated with the widening anti-war movement building against the threat of the atomic bomb in Britain that time. (“Answers.com,” 2007)
The term acid rock was created due to the relationship of music and LSD which is a drug more commonly known as acid. It refers to music associated and recorded under the influence of LSD and the songs are commonly related to drug induced themes. A rock concert, in fact, is considered as one of the most widely known environment of drug abuse. Because of the wild, angry image carried by this and this genre called acid rock, rock music will always be defined by its association to drugs just like jazz’s bebop period. (John Newmeyer, 2007)
Since the youth is the main audience of rock, this genre’s popular culture side can be considered as the one which will last longer since this is the part that expresses their interests. I agree to the point that rock can be considered as a classical music if it continues to be controversial and interesting not only for the youth but for adults as well.
