The College of New Jersey School of Education Department of Educational Administration & Secondary Education EDFN 508 Introduction to Research Instructor: Dr. Seaton Journal Article Critique Brenda Martin-Lee Article: The Influence of Multicultural Educational Practices on Student Outcomes and Intergroup Relations 1) What is the main problem being addressed by the study? Is it clearly stated? The main problem being addressed by the study is how to adequately serve the racially and ethnically diverse student body which exists today. The current educational process is not working for certain populations of students.
African American and Latino students are dropping out of school in alarming rates and students of color are underperforming relative to their potential. The main problem being addressed by the study is clearly stated. 2) What is the purpose of the study? Is it clearly stated? The purpose of the study is to examine the questions about the effect of multicultural education in improving performances of students of color and improving intergroup relations in school communities. Yes, the study’s purpose is clearly stated beginning with the words, “I endeavor to examine…” ) What is the hypothesis? If one is stated, is it directional or nondirectional? The hypothesis is to test that multicultural education has no effect on improving educational outcomes of students of color and intergroup relations. 4) What type of research method is used in the study? The research method used for this study was the mixed method design of hard and soft data: numerical data gathered from a small group and informal and formal discussions and case studies. 5) Who are the subjects involved and how was the sample obtained?
The subjects involved are minority students in K-12 setting and college arena as well as teachers and administrators. 6) What are the main results of the study? Summarize the findings. Do you think the conclusions reached by the researcher(s) are valid? The main results of the study show that all students (white & minority) benefit academically from multicultural education through increased academic performance. It also shows that content integration is the most popular and the easiest method to implement in the classroom; the same for cooperative learning.
It has been noted that the other dimensions of multicultural education should be practiced and examined. I believe the conclusions reached by the researcher were gathered from a small sample which limited the study to a lot of assumptions. As the researcher mentioned several times, there is not enough literature on each of the dimensions of multicultural education and should be further studied. 7) Overall, do you think the study makes an important contribution to advancing knowledge? Explain.
Yes, I do think the study makes an important contribution to advancing knowledge. While some aspects of multicultural education have been implemented in the classroom: content integration and prejudice reduction, the other components: knowledge construction, equity pedagogy, and empowering school culture have not been so widely implemented. This literature hopes to inform practice so that administrators and teachers are enlighten as to ways they can incorporate the principles & practices of multicultural education into their school culture. ) Did you notice any flaws in the study? No, I did not notice any flaws in this study. 9) How does this study support or relate to your research project? This study relates the most to my research project because it brings to the forefront the purpose for my study: the importance of multicultural education in our global society. 10) Check the references at the end of the study. Are there any studies listed that might help you with your research? There are several relevant references throughout the study that will help further my research.
